The Energy Department today announced new standards geared toward making commercial refrigerators and deep freezers 30% more efficient compared to 2009 standards to help businesses save cash and energy. As well as new standards, there are numerous ways companies can reduce energy use of commercial refrigerators and deep freezers.

Here are just a few suggestions:

  • Turn on anti-sweat heaters when ambient conditions cause condensation on the display doors.
  • Check door gaskets and auto closers to ensure they are in good condition. If these aren’t functioning correctly, leading to energy waste and spoiled food warm, humid air can enter refrigeration compartments.This can help improve heat transfer within the system.
  • Install motion detectors for case lighting systems. This will turn lights on and off when needed.
  • Install nighttime drapes on cases that are open to help in keeping refrigerated atmosphere from escaping when normal business hours are over.
